Speed (spelling: SPEED) is a four-piece Japanese girl band from Okinawa , which was very popular throughout Asia , especially in the 1990s. All four members graduated from Okinawa Actors School , where popular artists such as Namie Amuro and MAX were trained.

They are also the most successful music group in Asia, as they have sold more than 20 million CDs in just three years and eight months.

Career

Speed made her debut on August 5, 1996 with her first single, Body & Soul , in Japan. The single landed at number 4 on the Oricon charts and sold more than 600,000 times in Japan. Because of its success, the second single was released on November 18, 1996, under the name Steady . With Steady , the band also achieved a milestone in the Japanese music industry, as this single sold more than a million times in Japan alone. After another single Go! Go! Heaven , which was released in March 1997 and with which the group was able to reach the top of the Oricon charts for the first time, the band released their first studio album in May 1997. The studio album got the title Starting Over and finally landed at number 1 on the Oricon charts, where it stayed in the charts for up to 53 weeks and sold almost two million times.

Over time, Speed released more and more albums and singles, but on March 31, 2000 the band members went their separate ways. The reasons for this were plans for solo careers and their studies. Her short comeback followed on August 27, 2003 with the release of the single Be My Love and although the single sold more than 120,000 times, the single could not build on the previous successes. After another single release, Walking in the Rain / Stars to Shine Again , which could sell up to 30,000 times, and the studio album Bridge , Speed took a break again.

An actual comeback followed on November 12, 2008 with the single Ashita no Sora ( あ し た の 空 ). The members of Speed have decided not to take any time off for the time being.
