Spearfishing ( English spearfishing or underwater hunting ) refers to the underwater hunting of fish and crabs.

history

Spear fishing is one of the early techniques of gathering food . Spear fishing is a traditional part of commercial fishing in many countries around the world. It is particularly resource-efficient compared to all other types of fishing . There is no unwanted bycatch or damage from nets or lines.

techniques

Early techniques initially used barbed spears as known from Basi Aje Tado . Fishing with harpoons was more effective because their barbs made fishing more productive. Modern spearfishing usually dive deep as apnea divers without compressed air and try to catch the fish only with the help of a mechanical harpoon. This requires excellent physical condition and a flair for hunting. To catch a larger, more experienced fish, it may be necessary to wait minutes on the ocean floor or behind rocks.

Another form is open water hunting. Here the fishermen swim with a buoy or a canoe on the open sea. They connect to their float with a long cord and dive into the depths. Drifting in the current, they wait until a fish swims right in front of the harpoon. Large tuna in particular are hunted , but also swordfish , mackerel and snapper .

hazards

After a success the catch must be salvaged, especially with large fish it can lead to tough and long fights. In the course of the fight it may a. hunting fever can lead to a hunter overestimating his own abilities, leading to a fatal accident. In the high season, for example, a diver in Spain alone loses his life spearfishing almost every week.

criticism

At the beginning of recreational diving, underwater hunting was also carried out with compressed air breathing apparatus. In the Mediterranean in particular, some fish stocks have been severely depleted due to the long diver's stay. This led to numerous campaigns on the part of the newly founded diving sports associations in which underwater hunting was fundamentally denigrated. Historically, this is the reason for the rejection of spear fishing by many diving sports organizations.

Legal situation

Unlike in Germany, spear fishing is allowed in many countries. Since legal regulations can change, you should secure yourself with local authorities before entering the respective country with a harpoon, as possession alone can be punished in some countries and sometimes severe penalties can be imposed for poaching .
