Speichererkoog

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A storage pond is a pond that can store the water collected by draining the marsh . This is particularly important in the case of storm surges , since in this case the water cannot flow into the open sea and, under certain geographical conditions, the inland water accumulating in the inland can cause flooding.

In order to be able to fulfill this purpose, a storage area must not be densely populated and must have large open spaces. A relatively well-known example is the Dithmarscher Speichererkoog on the Meldorfer Bucht between Meldorf , Epenwöhrden and Warwerort , which for the most part consists of two nature reserves.
