Spert Island is an island in the Palmer Archipelago west of the Antarctic Peninsula . It lies in front of the western foothills of Trinity Island , from which it is separated by the 110 m wide Tschajka Passage .
Participants in the Swedish Antarctic Expedition (1901–1903) led by Otto Nordenskjöld mapped them. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee made the designation in 1960. Namesake is Thomas Spert († 1541), captain of the Mary Rose , the flagship of King Henry VIII , and first Master of the Mariners of England .
