The Sphaerocarpales are an order of mosses from the Marchantiopsida class (which in turn belong to the liverworts ).

features

In terms of habit, the two families are very different: The Sphaerocarpaceae form round rosettes on moist soil, the Riellaceae form upright, winged stems and grow under water (submersed).

The common features are: Archegonia and sporogons are located in conspicuously pear-shaped, proliferating thallus tissue . Antheridia and archegonia have a single-layered shell. Oil bodies are missing. The Sporogon has no seta . The capsules are celistocarp and only release the spores , which are usually combined into tetrads, after the capsule has dissolved. No elaters are formed.

Systematics

The large systematic position of the Sphaerocarpidae was previously unclear, as their habitus differed greatly from the Marchantiidae. The lack of oil bodies in the normal lamina cells and the unicellular (leptosporangiate) sporogon wall justify their classification among the Marchantiopsida .

With only around 30 species in two sub-orders, the Sphaerocarpidae are one of the largest groups of liverworts with the fewest species:
