Sphaeroderma testaceum belongs to the flea beetles (tribe Alticini, subfamily Galerucinae) from the family of leaf beetles (Chrysomelidae). The beetle is also called artichoke flea .

features

The beetles are 3.5 to 4 millimeters in size. The yellowish-red colored beetles have an oval shape. The pronotum and elytra are strongly punctured. There is a longitudinal groove on each side of the wing covers. The strong femora enable the beetles, typical of most flea beetles, to jump away when in danger.

distribution

Sphaeroderma testaceum is originally a West Palearctic species. The species is common in southern and central Europe. In the north, their occurrence extends to the south of Scandinavia and Scotland . It occurs more frequently in Central Europe than the second species of the genus, Sphaeroderma rubidum , which occurs in Europe . Sphaeroderma testaceum is widespread in the Mediterranean area and is also found in North Africa (Tunisia), Cyprus and the Middle East. The species was introduced in North America and was first detected in Nova Scotia in August 2001 . It has established itself there in the Atlantic provinces in eastern Canada.

Way of life

The adult beetles fly from May to September. The host plants of the species form thistles ( Cirsium ) and ring thistles ( Carduus ), in particular the field thistle ( Cirsium arvense ), and, to a lesser extent, knapweed ( Centaurea ). In Canada, the field thistle introduced there is the main host plant. The larvae develop in the leaves of the host plants. They usually overwinter in the third (final) stage. The pupation takes place in the spring. The adult beetles also feed on the leaves of the host plants.

Similar species

The beetles of the related species Sphaeroderma rubidum look similar, but are more rounded and have less clear puncturing of the pronotum and elytra.
