Sphecodina is a genus of butterflies from the family of the swarmers (Sphingidae).

features

The moths are easy to distinguish from those of other genera. The hind wings have a wide, well-demarcated yellowish band that occupies the entire front edge and extends at the inner edge to the anal angle. The abdomen is flattened and has at least four pairs of tufts of scales on the sides.

The caterpillars have an elongated body that is somewhat flattened. There are two color variants, both of which are well camouflaged in the tendrils of the food plants of the vine family (Vitaceae).

Occurrence and way of life

Sphecodina caudata is found in the eastern Palearctic , Sphecodina abbottii is widespread in eastern North America. The moths are diurnal.
