features

Dark species with a body length of 5 to 6 mm. In contrast to the other Sphegina species, it has a completely black face and an unpolluted black shimmering lower episternum . The abdomen is club-shaped.

Occurrence

It is distributed in Europe via Finland, Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic and Romania. They are mostly found in the vicinity of streams and rail routes, in the Alpine region in alluvial hardwood forests (alluvial plains) and bank ash forests. They fly from May to June, females even until July.

Way of life

The adults usually fly in partial shade up to a height of 2 m over low-growing vegetation. They are flower visitors to strawberries, buttercups and marsh marigolds.
