The Sphinx Hill is a 145 m high, distinctive and black hill on King George Iceland in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It rises about 2.5 km north-northwest of Demay Point on the west bank of Admiralty Bay .
It was first mapped during the Fifth French Antarctic Expedition (1908–1910) under the direction of polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot . The hill was given the descriptive name based on the Egyptian Sphinx in 1954 by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after a survey carried out by Commander Frank William Hunt (* 1922) of the Royal Navy between 1951 and 1952.
