Game abandoned (handball)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A game abandonment in handball is the decision of the referee to abandon a game and not finish it within the regular playing time .

regulation

The decision to abandon the game is made by the referees or, in the case of only one referee, the referee. In the handball rules, this is regulated by Rule 17:12 as follows:

“The referees have the right to interrupt or abandon a game. Before a decision is made to abandon the game, all options for continuing the game must be exhausted. "

- Handball rule 17:12, from July 1, 2010

When a handball game is to be abandoned is largely at the discretion of the referees. The reasons for this can be very diverse. The handball rules only give an indication of the number of players in Rule 4: 1 as a possible reason for termination, but this is also at the discretion of the referees:

“If the number of players on a team falls below 5 on the playing area, the game can continue. It is at the discretion of the referee whether and when a game is to be abandoned (17:12) "

- Handball rule 4: 1, dated July 1, 2010

Some handball associations give guidelines for abandoning matches in their referee rules. The regional association Rheinhessen specifies the following, for example:

"A game can be abandoned by the referee,
a) if sudden weather conditions or other circumstances no longer permit a regular game,
b) if rioting by players or spectators makes it impossible to continue,
c) in the event of resistance, serious threat or assault against the referee ,
d) if a team justifiably demands the termination,
e) if it considers the termination to be necessary for compelling sporting reasons.
A team can demand that the game be abandoned if its number of players has fallen below the minimum number required by the rules.

The referee is only entitled to abandon a game when all possibilities for continuation have been exhausted. In particular, in cases b) - d), he should give the teams a period of 3 minutes to think about it, and only decide to abandon the game after it has been unsuccessful. "

Examples of game abandonment

Examples of the causes of game abandonment are:

  • Too few players of a team on the playing area due to time penalties
  • Too few players on a team due to disqualifications
  • Too few capable players on a team due to injuries
  • Acute serious illness of a player during the game
  • Serious acute injury to a player during the game
  • A coach's fear of the health of his players
  • Supervisor threatens the referee
  • Failure of the lighting system
  • Leaking hall roof
  • Serious health problems with the trainer
  • Fighting between players
  • The host makes use of his house rules and prohibits the continuation of the game
  • The coach takes his team off the field in protest

Consequences of abandoning the game

The DHB legal system provides the framework for the consequences of abandoning the game. According to § 19, the team that caused the game to be abandoned loses. Section 25 regulates the costs of abandoning a game by a club or team.

In the event that unsportsmanlike conduct was the reason for abandoning the game, Section 16 applies:

"If a referee abandons a game due to unsportsmanlike conduct, the guilty party must be punished regardless of the game score resulting from the game or legal system. The game control agency applies for a decision to the competent legal authority and informs the parties involved. "

- DHB legal system from July 1, 2007

In some cases, both teams can be penalized with a point deduction.
