The Spiez is a screw steamer built in 1901 on Lake Thun . After the ship operated as a diesel- powered motor ship between 1952 and 2008, it was given a new steam engine and will be used again by BLS shipping from 2020. The Spiezerli is the oldest ship in the BLS Schifffahrt portfolio .

history

Originally built as a summer excursion boat, the ship was adapted for year-round operation as early as 1912.

After an external renovation in 1949, the steam engine was replaced by a diesel engine in 1951/52. Until 1974 the ship was regularly used in the timetable service, until 2007 it was used for extra trips. In 1993/94 the covered rooms were enlarged so that 70 people can be accommodated under the roof.

Evaluation renewal

The association “Friends of the Steamship Company on Lake Thun and Brienz” is committed to renewing the ship as a screw steamer. A steam engine of at least 110 kW (150 HP) is required, either a used machine or a newly built one. The 90 kW machine from DS Lützelau , which is located in the Winterthur steam center , has been examined, but cannot be refurbished due to cracks in the cylinder block.

The original intention to heat the new steam boiler with wood pellets was not pursued any further. After evaluating various types of boilers, the decision was made in favor of a three-pass boiler with a corrugated flame tube for light oil combustion.

Revaporization

A modern twin steam engine was ordered from DLM AG in Winterthur in 2018. Its two cylinders, opposite each other in a V-shape at a 45 ° angle to the vertical, act on the crankshaft below.

The boiler manufactured by BBS GmbH in Freiberg am Neckar (16 bar, 420 ° C, 1 ton of steam per hour, automatic operation) with superheater was installed in Thun on December 1, 2018. At this point in time, the DLM had not yet completed the steam engine. The parts for the new twin steam engine have been ready since spring 2019, assembly took place in July / August 2019, tests, delivery, further tests and installation in September. Test drives and commissioning should take place in spring 2020.
