The company Dampflokomotiv- und Maschinenfabrik DLM AG is a Swiss company based in Winterthur . The company is active in the development and manufacture of modern steam locomotives and steam engines as well as in their modernization and revision.

founding

DLM AG has its origins in the former Swiss Lokomotiv- und Maschinenfabrik (SLM) and split off from this in mid-2000. Under the direction of Ing.Roger Waller, new steam locomotives are developed, with particular emphasis on ecological and economic aspects.

Modern steam

Several new developments after the general end of steam traction, but also the use of well-known but so far neglected technologies (such as extensive boiler insulation) increase the economy, availability and environmental friendliness of the locomotives. The new rack-and-pinion locomotives developed by Roger Waller for the SLM, which are used on several mountain railways, are light oil-fired and have better emissions than diesel locomotives of the same power. The first newly developed steam locomotives were ordered by the Brienz-Rothorn Railway in 1992 . Because these worked well, five more were ordered in 1996.

The Gas Producer Combustion System (GPCS) can be used for coal-fired new- build engines , a type of coal gasification that results in significant increases in efficiency, as demonstrated in the SAR's Red Devil . The one-man operation also reduces personnel costs. The target groups for the locomotives are currently tourist and private railways worldwide.

The newly built ship engine of the paddle steamer Montreux

Steam engines were designed for ships that can be operated remotely - on the steam ships currently in use, for example on Lake Lucerne, two men are solely responsible for the engine, and commands are given via the engine telegraph . So far, an old paddle steamer has been equipped with a modern machine. From 1962 to 1998 the ship Montreux drove with a diesel-electric drive of the paddle wheels. On behalf of the Compagnie générale de navigation sur le Lac Léman , a modern, light oil-fired steam drive from DLM was installed. Since 2001, the steamer back to its former glory with a 2-cyl compound machine of the DLM of 650  kW (880  hp ) in the Lake Geneva in use .

As of today

Modern Steam Steam Locomotive DLM 52 8055

The DLM has carried out modernizations, repairs and overhauls for various steam locomotive operators. The most extensive modernization of a steam locomotive to date to include modern technology was carried out on 52 8055.

Locomotive 52 8055

The locomotive 52 8055 is a class 52.80 locomotive that had already been modernized in the GDR and was rebuilt in 1998 according to the latest steam technology. a. with light oil firing, better insulation and roller bearings.

It was first used in Germany for trains such as the Nostalgie Istanbul Orient Express , and is currently again owned by DLM AG itself, which uses it for its own special trains. It can also be rented for private trips.

Technically, it can be used on standard-gauge railways in Switzerland, Germany and Austria. In terms of safety technology, in addition to the outdated Indusi (DE, A) and the Integra-Signum Zugsicherung (CH), an ETCS antenna for use on lines with ETCS Level 1 LS has been installed since 2012 . For journeys on DB Netz routes, the existing industrial facilities would have to be upgraded to the new PZB 90 standard.

Locomotive 23 058

DLM rebuilt the Eurovapor locomotive 23 058, a DB class 23 locomotive , for use on the nostalgic steam train Friese Stoomtrein Maatschappij , Friesland , Netherlands , and converted it from coal-fired to oil-fired with biodiesel .

The locomotive was never used in Friesland because the museum railroad operator stopped paying in November 2011 before commissioning and staff training could begin.

The 23 058 was returned to Switzerland on February 28, 2013 and then stood at modern steam am Hauenstein in the depot in Sissach BL . In the course of 2017, DLM and friends dismantled it to the original coal-fired furnace; it left Switzerland on July 2, 2017 and returned to Heilbronn , where it is managed by EUROVAPOR , Group 23 058.

Until the relocation in 2017, it was equipped with the analog train protection Indusi (DE, A). ETCS Level 1 LS train protection is now required for use in Switzerland . In Germany it was converted to the digital train protection system PZB 90 / GSM ZUB according to EBA regulations for approval on the DB AG network.

Steam storage locomotives

In addition to the mainline locomotives , the DLM also offers steam storage locomotives for shunting tasks. Two steam storage locomotives of the Meiningen (FLC) type were renewed at DLM, including with solar collectors for power supply. They are available for use by industrial companies that already operate steam boilers for process heat.
