Anterior nasal spine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The anterior nasal spine is the point at which the upper jaw protrudes the furthest forward.
The anterior nasal spine is the protruding bone in the lower center of the nostril .

The spina nasalis anterior (dt. Nasal spinous process) is a bony thickening at the junction of the right and left upper jawbone ( sutura inter maxillaris ). It is the lowest, foremost point in the midline of the piriform aperture . The cartilaginous nasal septum is attached to it with particularly strong collagen fibers.

Clinical significance

Often bony ridges pull back from this point, which narrow the nasal cavity and make nasal breathing difficult. Even if the nasal septum is next to the anterior nasal spine as a result of an accident or congenitally, nasal breathing can be impeded. One then speaks of a (sub) dislocation of the nasal septum. These changes can be corrected surgically as part of a septoplasty . Otherwise, the anterior nasal spine contributes little to characterizing the midface profile.

The anterior nasal spine is an important reference point for determining the German horizontal and the Camper's plane when making dentures or special X-rays.
