Apertura piriformis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The aperture piriformis ( Latin : apertura "opening"; piriformis "pear-shaped") is the opening of the facial skull to the bony nasal cavity . It is covered by the nose made of cartilage and can be felt well as a bony edge in the upper and lateral area.

It is mainly formed by the right and left upper jaw bones , which unite at the lower edge to form the anterior nasal spine ; in the upper part the nasal bone delimits the opening. The cartilaginous septum (nasal septum) divides it into two halves.

The piriformis aperture can be narrowed by congenital malformations or by midface fractures or a fracture of the nasal bone , so that surgical expansion by lateral osteotomies as part of a rhinoplasty may be necessary.
