The statue in front of the house

The Spinozahuis is a building in the center of The Hague on Paviljoensgracht 72-74 . It was built as a tenement house by the painter Jan van Goyen in 1646 and after his death in 1657 it went to Havik Steen, Jan Steen's father . In 1669 the painter Hendrik van der Spijck bought the house. He rented an apartment to the philosopher Baruch Spinoza (1632–1677), who lived there from 1671 until his death, where he completed his important ethics .

The house remained in the possession of the van Spijk family until 1753, after which it had many owners. In 1926 it was bought by the Spinoza researcher Carl Gebhardt in order to set up the Sociëtas Spinozana . Today, the Vereniging het Spinozahuis has a library and a reading room in the house.

A plaque on the facade commemorates the philosopher, and there is also a statue of him near the house on the green strip of Paviljoensgracht.

The building is listed as a Rijksmonument . Documents on the house from 1945 to 1952 are in the archives of the Department of Archeology and Nature Conservation in the National Archives of the Ministry of Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap (ocw).
