Spiro Kristo

Spiro Kristo (* 1936 in Tirana ; † 2011 ) was an Albanian painter who was best known for some works in the style of socialist realism .

life and work

Several works by Kristo are part of the permanent collection of Galeria Kombëtare e Arteve in Tirana. These include the oil painting Ditë fluturimi ("Ein Flugtag "; 1968), the oil painting Brigadierja ("Die Brigadierin"; 1976), which was shown at documenta 14 in Athens in 2017 , and the painting Fëmijet ("Children"; 1966), that was shown at documenta 14 in Kassel. Peter Friedl refers to this painting in his video The Children from 2009 and relocates Kristo's idealized street scene of armed children to a room in the Hotel Dajti in Tirana, which was designed in the Italian fascist style.
