After previous committee work, the first art gallery in the country called Pinakoteka in Tirana was officially opened to the public on January 11, 1954 . Two years later the art gallery was relocated to a nearby location on Fortuzi Street .
On November 29, 1974, the new building of the gallery of figurative arts ( Albanian Galeria e Arteve Figurative ) opened in the city center on Bulevardi Dëshmorët e Kombit , which has considerably more exhibition space. By the time the new art gallery opened, the institution owned around 340 works of art.
