Foto Stamo (* 1916 in Erind , Gjirokastra , Qark Gjirokastra , † 1989 ) was an Albanian painter .

life and work

Foto Stamos attended the painting school opened in 1932 by Andrea Kushi in Tirana. He is a painter of Albanian socialist realism . His work is part of the collection of the Galeria Kombëtare e Arteve in Tirana. Color and light are very important in his painting. He was inspired for many of his portraits in the northern Albanian area of Zadrima . Stamo was named "Painter of the People" (piktori i popullit) in the Socialist People's Republic .

Almost 30 years after his death in 1989, Stamo was accused of collaborating with the Albanian State Security Police, Sigurimi .

The painting The Refugees (1941) was shown at documenta 14 .
