Live and act

Mio was born in Korça in 1891 . In 1908 he moved to Bucharest with his brother for economic reasons . In the Romanian capital he became active in the local Albanian artist colony. In 1915 he began his art studies at the National Art School in Bucharest . In 1919 he successfully completed his training and in the same year he opened his first personal exhibition in Bucharest. In 1920 he returned to his homeland for a few months and exhibited his works in Korça. This was also the first public painting exhibition in all of Albania . In September of the same year he went to Rome . A great admirer of the Italian Impressionists of the 19th and early 20th centuries, Mio enrolled at the Royal Academy di San Luca . However, financial problems forced him to interrupt his studies and return to Korça. There he took a position as an art teacher in the French school, where he taught, among other things, the future leader Enver Hoxha .

In 1924 he was able to return to Rome on the basis of a state scholarship and successfully complete his studies with a diploma in the same year. He then decided to spend the rest of his life in his birthplace, Korça, which was considered the cultural capital of Albania at the time .

During his life he took part in many exhibitions throughout Albania, including in Bari in 1942 . His last exhibition organized by him, which was a retrospective of his work, took place in Tirana in November 1957 . A few days later, on December 30, 1957, Mio died in Tirana from complications caused by jaundice .

Works

Vangjush Mio was the first impressionist from Albania. He was best known for his landscape paintings and is considered the best Albanian landscape painter of the 20th century. His favorite motifs were the cities of Korça , Pogradec and the surrounding area, but he also immortalized other places in Albania in his works such as Tirana, Elbasan , Himara , Berat and Gjirokastra .

In addition to landscape painting, Mio also excelled in portraiture.

Mio has had a remarkable career as a painter and has produced over 400 drawings and 130 paintings in 40 years. About 60 of his works can be admired in the National Art Gallery of Tirana . Other works by the artist will be presented by his daughter Rozeta in his house in Korça, which is now the Vangjush Mio Museum , which was renovated in 2010 . In 1994, 21 paintings were stolen there that have still not been found.

On the side, Mio also took photos - partly as a template for his pictures, partly as independent works.
