The hospital was opened as a pilgrimage hospital in 1353. The hospital is known for its baby flap ("baby window") introduced in 2001 , which was the first in Switzerland and in which twelve babies were deposited by 2016. The hospital is run by the Maria zum Finstern Wald Foundation.

history

In 1353 the first hospital was founded to "accommodate pilgrims". It was destroyed in a major fire in the village in 1577, but rebuilt a year later. In addition to its function as a pilgrim hospital , it was also a children's home, orphanage and poor house. From 1855 the hospital was run by the Sisters of Charity of the Holy Cross of Ingenbohl Monastery . A newly built poor, hospital and work house at this location was inaugurated in 1861. Two years later, the foundation company for a hospital was founded, which could be implemented from 1898. The first actual hospital was opened in 1904; the Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross also took over the management. In 1953 the hospital was transferred to the Maria zum Finstern Wald Foundation.

In 1973 the hospital burned down again, the following year the district of Einsiedeln took over the hospital and appointed the board of trustees. A new building took place so that the current hospital could be opened in 1979. From 2005, the Maria zum Finstern Wald Hospital Foundation took over the sole responsibility again.

In 2012, 30 million Swiss francs were invested in expanding the hospital.

The construction work for the 2020 hospital project was completed in autumn 2018.

On March 28, 2019 it was announced that there would be no merger between the hospitals in Einsiedeln and Lachen.

On September 22, 2019, 70% of the population of the Einsiedeln district voted for the “purchase agreement with the Maria zum Finsteren Wald Foundation (hospital) for the acquisition of 5,611 m² of land at a price of 2,524,950 francs”.

Ameos will take over the hospital on May 1st, 2020 . The foundation remains as owner.
