Spitzau (Vienna)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Spitzau is about 1.5 million cubic meters of large landfill in Breitenlee (22nd district of Vienna Donaustadt ) on the outskirts of Vienna . The old disposal site at the Spitzau landfill is one of the larger contaminated sites in the city ( contaminated site  W13 in the contaminated site atlas ). It was renovated by 1992 and is now recultivated as grassland .

location

The Spitzau landfill is located southeast of Breitenlee between today's Seestadt Aspern and Neuessling . The area lies on the Breitenleer cadastral border to Eßling , between the corridors Mittlere Ried , Untere Ried and the pony ponds .

The triangular parcel covers approximately 10.5  hectares .

Operation of the landfill

The Spitzau was an old gravel pit . It was used between 1970 and 1990 with a total of four municipal landfills for household waste, construction waste and waste material, as well as bentonite , with an area of 900,000 m³.

The landfill was technically inadequate, in particular the floor sealing was missing. The deposits reach into the groundwater fluctuation range.

Groundwater investigations in the late 1980s found considerable pollution, including lead and halogenated hydrocarbons , which, however, could not be directly assigned to landfill leachate. Due to the considerable amount of dump, the landfill was included in the Austrian Contaminated Site Atlas in 1991, albeit with lower priority 3.

Redevelopment

The renovation started in 1991. In a first phase the already covered landfill was reopened and relocated in two dumping areas. The old cover was converted into a modern basic seal for a new landfill, so that the construction project is one of the first pilot projects for landfill mining in Europe. This sealing consists of a structure with sand, sealing foil, drainage mat and a 1 m thick protective layer of sifted and sorted rotten household waste. At the same time, the area was provided with a side seal, which is designed as a double cut-off wall enclosure with internal groundwater lowering according to the Vienna Chamber System .

As a result, around 400,000 m³ of additional excavated material was brought in, mainly rotted household waste from the simultaneous measures WIG 64  Donaupark - Bruckhaufen (contaminated site W10, 2nd district) and Himmelteich  (W3, south of Donaustadt). The new landfill was professionally covered and reforested.

The following monitoring of the around 90,000 m³ of groundwater that is pumped out each year shows significant pollution with various pollutants, but no significant difference to the general background pollution of the environment. The contaminated site was therefore classified as remediated in 2009. Most of the pumped water evaporates in the Spitzau pond , which was created as a retention pond for the pumped water, or is rained on the newly constructed landfill. Today the Spitzau is part of the Donaustadt landscape protection area (part C, landscape maintenance zone development) and is subject to a construction ban (construction ban in accordance with § 8 (1) building regulations of Vienna)
