The Spitzberg near Coswig in Saxony forms one of the highest elevations in the southern Friedewald .

Location and surroundings

The Spitzberg rises as a western valley slope above the Spitzgrund, through which the Lockwitz flows, which was previously dammed at the retention basin Spitzgrundteich (just like at the Zimmermann ponds). The elevation lies immediately north of Coswig, and partially protrudes into the settlement area. Coswig Castle is right at its foot.

There is a triangulation pillar on the summit, which is used for measurements.

view

From the summit you get a view over the upper Elbe valley to the Meißner Dom , Spaargebirge , left Elbe heights, Eastern Ore Mountains. There is a sign on the mountain, set up by IG Friedewald, to the West Lusatian fault zone on which the Spitzberg is located.

nature

The slopes on Spitzberg are planted with hornbeam, sessile oak, and pine mixed forest. The predominantly sandy soil in the lower area is, however, only planted with pine and other conifers. Typical animal species are: deer, wild boar and red fox.
