The Spongiidae are a family sponges of Demosponge (Demospongiae) and live exclusively in the sea. The family is placed in the order Dictyoceratida , the distinguishing feature of which is a skeleton consisting of spongin fibers.

The Spongiidae includes encrusting , massive cup-shaped or branching forms. The surface is typically provided with small bumps. The spongin skeleton consists of spongin fibers arranged in a network. These may have included detritus or foreign spicules . The choanocyte chambers are relatively small.
