The Sports Park (Finnish: Turun urheilupuisto) in Turku was opened in 1893.
At the end of the 19th century, the city was growing rapidly and recreational areas were in demand. They wanted to create a sports area based on models in Great Britain and the German Empire . The choice finally fell on an unspoilt and largely rocky area in which there was already a pond that was used for ice skating in winter.
Today the site belongs to the city center and borders directly on the eastern bank of the Aurajoki River .
The large park includes a variety of z. Sports facilities, some of which are open all year round. In detail they are:
- Paavo Nurmi Stadium
- five tennis courts
- two basketball courts
- four beach areas
- a volleyball court
- two clay courts / natural ice rink
- a lawn
- Disc golf course
- Fitness course
- Outdoor fitness equipment
- Sauna Olympic Sports Park
- an artificial turf pitch
