The Paavo Nurmi Stadium ( Finnish Paavo Nurmen Stadium ) is a football stadium with an eight-lane athletics facility in the Finnish city of Turku . It offers space for 13,000 spectators and is mainly used for soccer games and athletics competitions.
history
The stadium is named after the exceptional Finnish runner Paavo Nurmi who died in 1973 . After renovation work, it was renamed on June 13, 1997 on the 100th birthday of his native Turku. The old stadium was built in the 1890s when the Sports Park Turku ( Turun Urheilupuisto in Finnish ) was built in the city. In 1957, the Paavo Nurmi Games were held for the first time in honor of Nurmi's 60th birthday . Since then, the athletics event has been held annually in the Nurmi Stadium. The sporting event has been part of the IAAF World Challenge since 2017 . The next Paavo Nurmi Games are to take place on June 13, 2017.
20 world records were set in the stadium: John Landy in the 1,500 m and the mile run (1954), Paavo Nurmi in the 3,000 m (1922), Emil Zátopek (1950) and Ron Clarke (1965) in the 10,000 m, Viljo Heino in the Hour run (1945) and the 20 km (1949), Matti Järvinen in the javelin throw (1932) and Charles Hoff in the pole vault (1925).
