Endorheic, soda lake |
The Spotted Lake is a soda lake in the Canadian province of British Columbia . The lake is one of the endorheic waters, so it has no drainage. It is located about 10 km northwest of Osoyoos , on Highway 3 , north not far from the border with the USA .
The small lake is rich in a variety of minerals , including calcium , sodium sulfate, and magnesium sulfate . During the hot summer months, when a large part of the water in the lake evaporates, the concentrations of these minerals increase and they become visible in different places in the form of pools. These shift in size and color throughout the summer. The colors range from blue to green to yellow.
During the First World War , the minerals from the lake were used to make ammunition. Up to a tonne of salt was extracted from the surface of the lake every day. It is said among those resident in the area that before these minerals were extracted, the lake displayed an even greater variety of colors.
