The bung bayonet usually has a straight, double-edged, leaf-shaped blade. The blade comes in different shapes. Smooth, without a central ridge or hollow grind , with a central ridge or with a hollow grind. The handle is mostly made of wood or horn and has a short quillons . The knob is rounded so that the bung bayonet can be inserted into the gun barrel . The handle of the bung bayonet is adapted to the caliber of the respective rifle. The forerunner of the bung bayonet is a hunting weapon . The blade of a boar pen was provided with a handle (see picture info box, left) in order to kill the not yet dead game after a wounding shot . When the bung bayonet was not attached to the rifle, it could be used as a dagger . The first written evidence of the use of a bayonet comes from the armory to Dresden from 1669. There it is described as "the Musqueden belonging knife ". Later the bayonets were attached under the rifle barrel in order to also be able to fire while the bayonet is attached to the rifle.
