The Sputnik Islands ( Russian Острова Спутники Ostrowa sputniki ) are two icy and significantly different sized islands before Pennell Coast of the East Antarctic Victoria Land . They are located between Cape Cheetham and Cape Williams in the entrance to Ob 'Bay . The larger northeast island measures 30.3 km², the smaller southwest 1.3 km². The larger island reaches a height of 330 m .
The first aerial photographs were taken during the US operation Highjump (1946–1947). Scientists on a Soviet Antarctic expedition carried out measurements and naming in 1958. It is named after the first artificial earth satellite Sputnik 1 .
