Illumination from the Squarcialupi Codex: Francesco Landini

The Squarcialupi Codex is a collection of works by composers from the Trecento .

Emergence

The codex was handwritten between 1410 and 1415 in the monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Florence. The aim of the authors was to collect as many works as possible by the deceased and still living composers of the Trecento .

The codex got its name from the organist Antonio Squarcialupi , who did not write it himself, but who owned it in the 15th century. Then it came to the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana through the mediation of Raffaele Bonamici and Giuliano di Lorenzo de 'Medici in 1512/13 (shelfmark: Palatino 87).

Structure and repertoire

The codex contains 352 works by twelve composers of the Trecento on 216 folios . The works are arranged by composer. By far the most prominent composer is the well-known Francesco Landini , who is represented with 145 works. This is followed, with far fewer works, by Jacopo da Bologna (38 works) and Bartolino da Padova (37 works).
