Antonio Squarcialupi (also Sguarcialupi , Scharcialupi or Antonio degli Organi ; actually Antonio del Besa ; born March 27, 1416 in Florence ; † July 6, 1480 ibid) was an Italian organist and composer .

Life

Not much is known about Squarcialupi's life, but his work was of no small importance at that time. At the age of 20 he got a job as an organist in the Florentine Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore , which he held for his entire life. Soon he became famous as the "master of the organ" and gave music lessons to his beneficiary Lorenzo il Magnifico . The question of whether Heinrich Isaac Squarcialupis was a pupil is not entirely clear . In some sources he is also referred to as an organ builder.

Even if nothing of his compositions has survived, he must have had a strong influence on the music of the early Italian Renaissance : on the one hand through his very popular organ works, on the other hand through his outstanding playing skills, which is reflected in his nickname Antonio degli Organi . In his possession was the Squarcialupi Codex named after him , in which around 350 secular works of the Trecento music of the time are listed - chronologically and according to composer - and which is one of the most important and extensive sources. The authorship of the Squarcialupi is mostly doubted, but this is not guaranteed with certainty.
