Jan Tesánek

Jan Tesánek (also Johann Tesanek , Latin Ioannes Tessanek ; born December 9, 1728 in Brandeis on the Elbe , † June 22, 1788 in Prague ) was a Bohemian Jesuit , physicist , mathematician and astronomer .

Life

Jan Tesánek attended Charles University in Prague after high school . In 1745 he joined the order of the Jesuits and studied mathematics, physics and astronomy with Joseph Stepling . Stepling introduced him to the works of Isaac Newton , among others . After studying at the philosophical faculty , he taught at Latin schools for three years, after which he began studying theology .

After his ordination he was appointed professor at Charles University, but the order soon transferred him to the Theological Convict in Olomouc , where he also taught. With the intercession of his teacher Stepling, he was allowed to return to Prague two years later, where he taught higher mathematics . Even after the dissolution of the order in 1773, he kept this position. 1778 was appointed dean of the mathematics and physics faculty. Most of his publications appeared in German in the treatises of the Royal Bohemian Society of Sciences , of which he was a member.
