Irving Sager designed the station in a strict international style . Typical of this style and the architectural taste of the 1960s are the extensive unadorned surfaces of walls, corridors and access areas, which in Square Victoria OACI is most clearly expressed in the Montreal metro network. The walls are covered with gray, beige and gold-colored bricks. The platform level with two side platforms is 16.2 meters deep . From the distribution level above , two longer pedestrian tunnels lead to four different exits. The distances to the neighboring stations, measured from station end to station start, are 392.60 meters to Bonaventure and 356.60 meters to Place-d'Armes .

There are connections to six bus routes operated by the Société de transport de Montréal . The Station Square-Victoria-OACI is integrated into the extensive Montreal underground city . The ICAO headquarters , the Tour Bell and Tour de la Bourse skyscrapers , the Banque nationale du Canada , the Center de commerce mondial de Montréal and several hotel buildings are accessible underground . The metro stations Bonaventure and Place-d'Armes are also within walking distance . Other nearby attractions include the Saint-Patrick de Montréal Basilica and the Tour de la Banque Royale .

Art Nouveau station entrance by Hector Guimard

The entrance area on Rue Saint-Antoine offers a stylistic contrast to the station complex, which is one of the few in Montreal that leads directly from the open to the underground and is not integrated into a building. In 1967 the RATP donated one of those well-known Art Nouveau entrances made of interwoven iron girders that Hector Guimard had created for the Paris Metro at the beginning of the 20th century . The suggestion for this came from Mayor Jean Drapeau , who during an information visit to Paris saw one of the Guimard entrances at the Étoile station being demolished. The Montrealer Guimard entrance cannot be assigned to a specific Paris metro station, but is composed of the modular parts of various originals.

A mural made of laminated plastic is affixed to the wall of the northern access tunnel . The work of the artist Jean-Paul Mousseau consists of a series of triangular elements, divided by a striped background. In the Op Art style , the triangles point towards the platforms. From 1976 the work of art was located in the southern access tunnel, but after three decades had to give way to a new ventilation shaft and has been at the current location since 2007.

history

The station opened on February 6, 1967, along with the short section from Place-d'Armes. The temporary terminus of the orange line was here for a week, until it was extended to Bonaventure on February 13, 1967. The station is named after Square Victoria , a public square in the city center that has existed since 1813 and which has been the center of the quarter internationally since the completion of an urban development project. In 1860 it was renamed in honor of Queen Victoria on the occasion of a visit by her son, who later became King Edward VII.

The station was originally called Square-Victoria , its current name was given in March 2014. The addition OACI is the French abbreviation of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which has its headquarters nearby.
