Srđa Popović (2012)

Srđa Popović ( Serbian - Cyrillic Срђа Поповић ; * around 1973 in Belgrade ) is a Serbian political activist. Popović was a student of marine biology before joining the resistance movement against Slobodan Milošević . He is the co-founder of Otpor! . After Milošević's fall in 2000, he was a member of the Serbian parliament . His mentor was the Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Đinđić , who was murdered in 2003. In 2004 he co-founded CANVAS .

The Tagesspiegel described Popović as a "resistance guru" who runs "revolution as a business". Before Milosevic was overthrown, Popovic and his colleagues received training from a foundation supported by the US Republicans. She was significantly influenced by the book "The Politics of Nonviolent Action" by US political scientist Gene Sharp . Popovic and his colleagues have trained activists in Ukraine (Orange Revolution), Georgia, Tunisia and Egypt (Arab Spring). In November 2011, Foreign Policy magazine named Popović one of the top 100 global thought leaders. In a review of the WDR 5 radio show Politikum , Popovic's book "Protest" from 2015 was rated as "lively 'Protest' romanticism". Popovic is "a man who seeks to please. He promises what goes down well. He ignores what complicates things. And he keeps silent about what could undermine his own credibility."

Popović was elected rector of the British elite university of Saint Andrews in October 2017 . The rector is elected every three years by all enrolled students at the university.
