Sremčica ( Serbian - Cyrillic Сремчица ) is a suburb of the municipality of Čukarica in the Serbian capital Belgrade.

Sremčica is located south of Belgrade and begins about 2 km south of the Železnik neighborhood (the centers of the two settlements are 6-7 km apart). It is a typical street housing estate, with many side streets, almost all of which lead to the main street Beogradska . The main road stretches for 6-7 km through the whole of Sremčica. The northern part of the local municipality ( mesna zajednica ) is a sub-municipal administrative unit, named Gorica, which is popularly called Naselje (Serbian for "settlement"). The southern part is organized like a local municipality with the same name as the whole settlement, Sremčica. The so-called Gorica is characterized by high-rise buildings and apartment blocks, while the southern part of Sremčica is characterized by single and multi-family houses.

population

The rural settlement has been one of the fastest growing suburbs of Belgrade since 1970. Due to its accelerated growth, which is largely illegal, there are significant deficiencies in the infrastructure , so that most parts of Sremčica have problems with water supply and sewage. With over 50,000 inhabitants, Sremčica is one of the largest Belgrade settlements (1948: 2076 inhabitants). According to the 2001 census, 89.45% Serbs, 2.86% Roma, 1.5% Montenegrins, 0.85% Yugoslavs and 0.6% Macedonians live here. In Sremčica there is a connection between the municipal transport company and Belgrade, approx. 10 km away (bus lines no. 511 and 512).

geography

The area around the settlement consists partly of limestone . One of the most famous features in Sremčica is a small pond, Rakina Bara. It is a small natural lake with an area of 3 hectares in a limestone pit. The whole of Sremčica is surrounded by Lipovačka šuma (šuma = forest), which connects several Belgrade suburbs. In the past, Sremčica was considered a Belgrade Nature Park, as it is 200 m above sea level and is encircled by the Lipovačka šuma.
