Appearance

The Andaman green pigeon reaches a body size between 24 and 30 centimeters, depending on the subspecies. The body is relatively plump, the tail is short. There is a noticeable gender dimorphism, so that males and females can be distinguished even when observing the fields.

The male of the Andaman green pigeon has a bright yellow-green forehead and an equally colored throat. On the top of the head, the plumage turns into a blue-gray. The chest and belly are pale green. The shoulders and the coat are dark red-brown with a purple tinge. The beak is green at the base and pale gray to blue-gray at the tip. The iris is surrounded by a red, featherless eye ring. The inner ring is bluish. The feet and legs are reddish. The females differ from the males because they lack the dark red-brown plumage. Their shoulders and coat are olive green.

Spread and behavior

The distribution area of the Andaman green pigeon is very large and extends from western India to Thailand , Vietnam , the Philippine islands , the Sulu archipelago as well as the Nicobar and Andaman Islands . Andaman pigeons are lowland dwellers who inhabit both forests and arable land. They are tree-dwelling species that rarely come to the ground. They mainly feed on fruits and berries. As with many green pigeons, wild figs play a major role in the diet of this pigeon species.

The nest is built in trees or bushes. The clutch comprises two eggs.
