Sri Lankans in Switzerland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sri Lankans in Switzerland are immigrants from Sri Lanka who live in Switzerland .

There are around 46,000 to 55,000 Swiss people of Sri Lankan origin in Switzerland. They mostly speak Sinhala or Tamil as their mother tongue, as well as English , German or Swiss German , Swiss French and Swiss Italian as a second language. They are predominantly followers of Buddhism or Hinduism , there are also minorities of Muslims and Protestant Christians . About 32,000 to over 42,000 of these are Sri Lankan Tamils .

Immigration history

Since the 1990s, Switzerland had a relatively large Tamil population among European nations , almost all of them refugees from the civil war in Sri Lanka . Many of them have been living in Switzerland for more than 15 years because of the armed conflicts in their home country.

terrorism

The refugees from Sri Lanka made Switzerland a base for militant Tamil groups such as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), the rebels of the Sri Lankan civil war against the government. The LTTE in Switzerland were known as the "Swiss Tigers". The Sri Lankan Tamil community in Switzerland has been the victim of an LTTE network many times. Their financial contribution to the LTTE was disproportionate to the number of Tamils living in other Western countries.

War refugees

With the end of the civil war in Sri Lanka, LTTE networks in the world were disbanded - by both the Sri Lankan and foreign governments. In 2011, the Swiss police arrested ten former LTTE representatives in the country for threatening and blackmailing Tamils from the Sri Lankan diaspora in support of the LTTE and the war. These funds were mainly used to buy weapons in Sri Lanka. Among those arrested were the chairman of the LTTE in Switzerland, Vijaratnam Sivanesan alias Ragu alias Ragupathy , his predecessor Chelliah Kularajasekeram alias Kulam and the Swiss Tiger CFO Chelliah Jeyapalan alias Abdullah .
