Ssaurabi

Korean spelling
Korean alphabet : 싸울 아비
Revised Romanization : Ssaurabi
McCune-Reischauer : Ssaurabi

Ssaurabi is a modern Korean word creation meaning a man who fights . In South Korea , along with samurang , this is a popular false etymology of the Japanese word samurai .

It is not clear when this term was coined. Its earliest known use is from 1983: Kim Yong-woon, a math historian, writes in his book ( Kankokujin to Nihonjin )

“In Korean, ssaul means to fight and abi means man. In Korean, Ssaurabi would literally mean a man who fights . Even at the risk of being verbally abused, I have the amateurish idea that the Japanese samurai has some connections to the Korean ssaurabi . ... the Ssaurabi spirit, which disappeared in Korea, is the origin of the Japanese samurai spirit. "

- Kim Yong-woon : Kankokujin to Nihonjin

The term Ssaurabi perhaps gained recognition among South Koreans in the 1990s because the computer game Samurai Shodown appeared in Korea under the name Ssaurabi Tuhon (싸울 아비 투혼) to circumvent anti-Japanese censorship.

Some Korean martial arts organizations claim that the Ssaurabi warriors came from the Kingdom of Baekje in southwestern Korea and that the Japanese samurai emerged from these. The South Korean film Saulabi (2002) by Moon Jong-geum refers to:

"Saulabi [sa wool ah bie]
1. an old Korean word for a noble swordsman
2. the etymology of the word samurai"

There is no historical evidence for the existence of ssaurabi in Baekje. Linguistically, it is difficult to explain the similarity between ssaurabi and samurai with regular correspondence between Koreans and Japanese. An anachronism becomes apparent when examining the older forms of ssauda , as this verb appears as sahoda in older Korean scripts. However, the use of sahorabi is also not proven.
