The town twinning between Ludwigsburg and Montbéliard originated in the 1950s and was officially recorded on May 6, 1962.

history

On July 2, 1948, among others, Carlo Schmid and Theodor Heuss founded the Franco-German Institute in Ludwigsburg. Since then, this institute has established a close network with sponsors of Franco-German cooperation.

The initiative for the town twinning between Ludwigsburg and Montbéliard came from Montbéliard's mayor Lucien Tharradin, who was himself imprisoned in Buchenwald concentration camp . In June 1950, at the third German-French mayors' conference, he expressed the wish for a “town twinning” with a city in Germany in order to promote exchange programs for schoolchildren, students, workers, apprentices and administrative staff. The aim was also that the families of the respective cities establish contact with each other and that prejudices are dispelled.

The partnership certificate of the two cities issued in the Ludwigsburg Museum .

On August 25, 1950, the municipal council gave its approval. In the autumn of 1950, a first oral town twinning agreement was concluded between Ludwigsburg and Montbéliard. On May 6, 1962, the mayor Dr. Anton Sauer and Jean-Pierre Tuefferd signed the town twinning document.

Even today, meetings, conferences, sporting events, school exchanges and trips together take place between the two cities. The partnership certificate was signed again in 2010 by the incumbent mayors Werner Spec and Jacques Helias on the 60th anniversary of the town twinning .

The two cities were awarded the Adenauer de Gaulle Prize for their city friendship .
