Stéphane Udry (* 1961 in Sion ) is a Swiss astronomer . He is best known for his discoveries of exoplanets . He was involved in the discovery of a large number of planets, including Gliese 581c , the first extrasolar planet on which liquid water (and therefore life) could possibly exist.

Life

Stéphane Udry received his PhD from the University of Geneva in 1992 . He then worked for 2 years at Rutgers University in New Jersey ( USA ). He later returned to Geneva and worked as a research associate in Michel Mayor's team (the discoverer of the first exoplanet, 51 Peg ). In 2007 he was appointed professor at the Faculty of Science at the University of Geneva.

job

At the beginning of his career, Udry studied the dynamics of galaxies . His main field of work today, however, is the measurement of radial velocities of other stars in order to find extrasolar planets. So far, Stéphane Udry has been involved in the discovery of over 100 exoplanets. Among them is the planet Gliese 581 c , the first earth-like planet discovered to date on which liquid water could possibly exist.
