Stühlinger Bridge

The Stühlinger Bridge is a prestressed concrete bridge for the light rail, pedestrians and cyclists in Freiburg im Breisgau . It connects Bertoldstrasse with Wannerstrasse and crosses Bismarckallee, the central bus station, the main train station , Wentzingerstrasse and Stühlinger Kirchplatz . The individual sections, which are quite short in relation to the total length, make them appear like an inner-city viaduct or an elevated road .

Opened on 9 December 1983 Stühlingerbrücke fulfills three functions simultaneously: It connects the old town with the Stühlinger , serves as a stop for the tram and pedestrian overpass of the main station with access to the platforms. All platforms are connected to the bridge by stairs and elevators. Only from the long-distance platforms do escalators lead to the bridge, which repeatedly fail and have to be repaired. The Freiburger Verkehrs AG is responsible for their operation .

The bridge has been in need of renovation since 2009 because water has penetrated the concrete. As soon as the renovation is carried out, cyclists are no longer allowed to use the bridge and have to switch to the neighboring Wiwilí bridge . The reason is the railing of the bridge, whose height is only 1.00 meters instead of the recently legally prescribed 1.20 meters. With the start of the renovation, the previous protection of existing buildings will expire and the regulation will be mandatory. The renovation initially planned for 2012 was postponed in August 2012 due to delays in the tender.

In autumn 2013 the spiral staircase to the concert hall was supported with wood. Due to a budget constraint at the Freiburg Civil Engineering Office, a tender in autumn 2015 and a renovation of the stairs from spring 2016 were assumed. In spring 2016 it was said that repairs could not start until autumn 2017 at the earliest. The renovation of the west ramp in Stühlinger began in October 2019 and is expected to last until November 2020. The entire renovation is expected to take six to eight years.
