Church of St-Etienne in Trèbes

St-Étienne is a Roman Catholic parish church in Trèbes in the Aude department in France . The church was classified as a monument historique in 1974 .

history

The church, consecrated to the holy arch-martyr Stephen , was mentioned for the first time in 1215. In a papal bull in 1253 it was referred to as a parish church. The current church goes back to construction work in the 13th and 14th centuries. The church has a nave with seven bays. The three yokes in front of the choir have three side chapels on either side. Without a choir bay, the nave is directly adjoined by a choir room closed on five sides. In 1515 the so-called Despeyroux chapel was added. In the west there was originally a representative portal with a vestibule. This was removed and the portal bricked up. The entrance portal is now on the south side in the third nave yoke. The mighty church tower rises in the southwest corner of the building.
