St-Donatien-St-Rogatien (Nantes)
The Basilique Saint-Donatien-et-Saint-Rogatien is a Roman Catholic minor basilica and is located on the Place des Enfants-Nantais in the Malakoff-Saint-Donatien district of Nantes . It is one of two basilicas in Nantes next to the Saint-Nicolas basilica.
history
The first church at the burial place of the brothers Donatian and Rogatian , two Nantes martyrs and saints of the 3rd century, is dated to the end of the 5th century. The construction of today's fourth church in the same place goes back to a vow made by the then Bishop Félix Fournier during the Franco-German War . Realization began in 1872. On October 19, 1889, the church was consecrated and in the same year made a basilica minor , but the construction and furnishing work dragged on into the 20th century.
A violent fire as a result of an accident during roofing work destroyed the roof of the church on June 15, 2015. Damage to the interior occurred mainly in the rear (choir) area.
Architecture and equipment
The church, designed by Émile Perrin in the neo-Romanesque style, is a three-aisled, cross-shaped basilica facing north-east with a double tower facade and a choir . The oldest piece of equipment is the ancient marble sarcophagus of the martyrs Donatian and Rogatian. The carillon installed in 1902 plays the Westminster chime .
A cemetery with the Stephanus chapel adjoins the church. The entire ensemble is a listed building.
