St-Jean-Baptiste is a church of the Lutheran Protestant Church of the Augsburg Confession of Alsace and Lorraine in Heiligenstein ( Département Bas-Rhin ) in France . The church has been on the French Heritage Register since 1973.

history

The oldest part of the church is the Romanesque choir tower from the 12th century . In 1554 the Reformation was introduced to the church . In 1688, by order of the French government, a simultaneum of Lutherans and Catholics was set up. The chapel in the choir tower is still used for Roman Catholic worship today.

In 1852–54 the nave was rebuilt according to plans by Antoineringenisen while retaining the medieval tower, which was raised and included in the structure. The east side of the choir tower protrudes only slightly beyond the outside of the hall and is therefore completely built in except for this side. The church received a bombing in 1944 and was restored in 1946 and 1998.
