Chapel of St-Jean

St-Jean is a Roman Catholic chapel located in the Brocéliande forest in the local area of Campénéac ( Morbihan department ) in Brittany . The chapel has been classified as a Monument historique since 1946 .

history

The St-Jean chapel is the only remnant of what was originally a larger complex with an associated hospital. The possessions in Campénéac were confirmed to the Knights Templar in 1160 by Duke Conan IV . The origins of the chapel are dated to the 13th century . It represents a single-nave building with a semicircular apse in the east. In 1312 the complex was transferred to the Order of St. John .

In 1568 Charles IX handed over Chapel and hospital for the Lords of Trécesson, who from then on had their burial place here. In the 17th century, the chapel was redesigned and received its current appearance.
