The St Anna Chapel

The St. Anna Chapel is a chapel in the Vorderberg district of the St. Gallen community of Amden . The current chapel from 1971 is the third chapel with this name in the village.

history

The first chapel was built between 1603 and 1605. It was founded by Marx Gmür, Martin and Hans Büsser, all of whom live on the Rietli . The reason (Hofstatt) was donated by Jakob Böni and Lienhard Gmür. The shield and the windows were donated by Peter Gmür and Margaretha Büsser. The three statues were donated by Hans Hefti, Susanna Gmür and Bastian Büsser, the large crucifix was donated by Melcher Spiller. The two bells were cast by Petter VII. Füssli (1575–1629) in 1606, and Lienhard Gmür contributed 79 crowns to the cost of the bells.

The Chur bishop Johannes V. Flugi inaugurated the chapel in honor of St. Anne on June 18, 1607. The choir altar was consecrated in honor of Saints Anne, Joachim and the Virgin Mary, the right-hand altar in honor of Saints Martin, James the Elder and Gallus, and the left-hand altar in honor of the four evangelists . During the visitation in 1639, the poor windows and the unlocked door were criticized. In 1652 the Schänis Abbey donated an altar in honor of St. Gaudentia .

In 1755 the chapel was dismantled by Johann Jakob and repaired by Josef Beck. In 1761 a new high altar was installed, this was created by Josef Müller and Martin Künzli, whereby the statues of Anna, Jörgs and Marx were preserved. In 1783 a chaplain fruition was donated. The sacristy was rebuilt between 1815 and 1816, and the entrance was moved to the narrow side in 1844. The two bells burst in 1879 so that Jakob Keller had to cast two new bells in 1890. In 1883 a renovation plan was submitted by Karl Reichlin, which was not approved. It was not until 1891 that a new building project based on the plans of Robert Rister was approved. The initiative for the new building came from Pastor Künzler (Herbal Pastor of Landquart). Giovanni Vittori was the site manager for the new building. The chapel was renovated in 1933/34, later it was demolished and replaced by a new building in 1971. A parking lot has been created in its old location, while the new chapel is located south of it. A kindergarten was also integrated into the new chapel. The kindergarten is located in the basement of the building, whereby this basement appears as the ground floor due to the hillside location from Sünden.

Buildings

First chapel

The south-facing chapel had a rectangular hall with a retracted choir and an open roof turret above the choir.

Second chapel

The east-facing chapel was in the neo-Romanesque style. The four-bay nave had polygonal apses that suggested a transept. The apsidial sacristy was attached to the recessed polygon choir in the apex of the choir. The tower built on the northern flank of the choir was crowned by a pyramid helmet over eyelashes . The chapel was demolished in 1970.

Third chapel

The modern style chapel has stained glass windows by Christoph Stooss .
