The St. Anthony's Hospital was a hospital under private ownership in Wegberg in North Rhine-Westphalia Heinsberg district .
history
The hospital was opened on September 26, 1905 by Franciscan Sisters as a "preservation school". On August 31, 1952, one of the worst accidents in motor racing history occurred on the nearby Grenzlandring, with 13 dead and 42 injured, many of whom were treated in the St. Antonius Clinic. A new building was inaugurated in 1964. In 1978 the existence of the house was in jeopardy, but the support of local residents and associations and 13,000 signatures prevented it from being closed. In 1980, 70 percent of the hospital was taken over by the city. In 2000 an extension was put into operation. In 2003, due to the poor economic situation, a merger with the Erkelenz hospital was considered, but this did not materialize. In 2004, 3028 inpatients and 4648 outpatients were treated.
In 2006 the St. Antonius Clinic was transferred to private sponsorship. At the beginning of 2007 it became known that the Mönchengladbach public prosecutor had initiated investigations against the then clinic owner and chief physician Arnold Pier after an anonymous complaint. In the judgment of the Mönchengladbach Regional Court on March 28, 2011, Pier was sentenced to four years imprisonment for double bodily harm resulting in death, two negligent homicides and 21 cases of bodily harm, from September 2011 in open execution . Since 2009 there has been a cooperation with the General Hospital Viersen GmbH in Viersen . On June 2, 2017, hospital operations ceased and the hospital closed because operations could no longer be maintained for economic reasons.
