history

Former House II, Immerath

Outpatient nursing has been carried out in Erkelenz since 1864. The Hermann Josef Foundation was established in 1867 by will by the notary Hermann-Josef Gormanns from Erkelenz. On March 3, 1869, the sovereign approval of the Hermann Josef Foundation took place. On October 19, 1869 the foundation stone was laid for the Hermann-Josef-Stift on today's Zehnthofweg and the west promenade. The first hospital was built with the foundation's capital of 60,000 thalers . When it opened on October 3, 1871, the poor servants of Jesus Christ (ADJC) from Dernbach took over the care. In 1898 a larger extension followed. From 1928 further extensive modernizations of the hospital were carried out.

During the Second World War, the hospital was evacuated to Querfurt in Saxony-Anhalt. On February 23, 1945, the building in Erkelenz was destroyed by a British air raid. In August of the same year, an emergency hospital was set up in a kindergarten building. In 1949, the decision of the City Council of Erkelenz decided to build a new hospital on the Tenholter Strasse and Goswinstrasse property, and in 1950 the first construction phase of the new building was moved into. From September 1950 to March 1975, care was taken over by the Catholic Sisterhood of the Cellites of St. Mary from Cologne. In 1952 the second construction phase followed with a new operating wing. Further extensions were made in the period from 1957 to 1959 (extension of the main bed wing by 53 beds) and 1961 to 1963 (another 31 beds and gynecological-obstetrical department). In 1976, a cooperation agreement was signed with Immerath Hospital.

On January 1st, 1988 the Immerath Hospital was taken over by the Order Association of the Daughters of the Holy Cross with 100 beds. Since the Immerath district had to give way to the Garzweiler II open-cast lignite mine , the Hermann Josef Hospital was expanded from 2005 onwards. In December 2004, a cardiology clinic with a cardiac catheter measuring station was added. At the end of March 2009, the Immerather hospital moved.

In 2010, 13,764 inpatients were treated.
