The Sankt Birgitta Chapel was a Christian chapel in the village of Sikavarp on the Kapelludden headland on the Swedish Baltic island of Öland . Only a ruin remains of the chapel.

history

The chapel was built in the 13th century and was the largest chapel in Öland. It was consecrated to St. Birgitta after the body was brought ashore in Sikavarp in 1374 during the transfer of the remains of the saint from Rome to Vadstena . Previously the church was presumably dedicated to the Celtic saint Brigida of Kildare .

The chapel was 27 meters long and 12 meters wide. The motivation for the construction probably arose when the Sikavarp trading center blossomed and attracted more and more people. The chapel should also enable larger services during trading hours.

With the end of Sikavarp as a trading center, the chapel also fell into disrepair. During a winter storm in 1914, the previously existing south wall collapsed. Today the northern wall in particular is still preserved.
