The St. John Paul II Church (Polish Kościół św. Jana Pawła II ) is a Catholic church in the Polish Kośmidry (Koschmiede). The church, consecrated to the patronage of Pope John Paul II , was built between 2011 and 2016 and is a subsidiary church of the parish of St. Catherine in Pawonków .

history

The residents of Kośmidry have long wanted their own church. In 1979 the inhabitants built a chapel without the knowledge of the pastor at the time and without the corresponding permission of the local bishop , which led to tensions in the relations between the provincial authorities in Częstochowa and the diocesan curia in Katowice . Only personal intervention and a request for an apology from Katowice Bishop Herbert Bednorz led to the issuance of appropriate permits for the construction of the church on June 13, 1980. The first Holy Mass in St. John Paul II was celebrated on July 2, 2017. After a five-year construction phase, the bishop of Gliwice , Jan Copyc , finally carried out the solemn consecration of the church on October 21, 2017 .

architecture

The oval shape of the current church is modeled on the fishing boat of the apostle Peter , which is also related to the patronage of the church, as the pope is considered to be the successor of St. Peter. The plan of the building and the placement of the large altar cross above the tabernacle are also intended to emphasize the relationship between the cross and the Eucharist . The outlines of the crucifix shine in red, the color of blood and martyrdom; the width of the crossbar of the crucifix corresponds to that of the altar in front of it . On both sides in flat, elongated niches on the right there is an icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa , which comes from the old chapel, and on the left a portrait of the church patron. The vault is adorned with a monochrome relief of the papal coat of arms of John Paul II.

The openings in the stained glass windows on the side walls also represent the fourteen stations of the Cross . The glass window above the choir shows the risen Christ. The benches and the cross altar come from the no longer existing parish church of St. Josef in the Essen district of Kupferdreh .
