The St. Johannis Church is the oldest Evangelical Lutheran church in Soltau .

The church is named John the Baptist , presumably because there was an old baptismal font behind the church. The earliest written mention is from 1464. St. Johannis is the oldest church in Soltau. While previously a wooden church called Sante Johannis Baptista stood at the current location, probably built around 830 and mentioned for the first time in 1304, a stone building was built in 1463, which was expanded again in 1597. In 1755 the building was demolished and replaced by a late baroque hall church . A tower was added in 1849/50. On Christmas night 1906 the church burned down completely, only the outer walls remained. It was then rebuilt within two years according to the plans of the architect Eduard Wendebourg in the neo-baroque style and has not changed significantly to this day. The ceiling painting (1908) is by Carl Wiederhold ; Rudolf Schäfer created the altar wall painting in 1921 as a memorial for the members of the Soltau parish who died in the First World War. The tower is 68 m high.

In 1972/73 the church interior was redesigned. The interior originally offered over 1000 seats, but over time it had become too large and was reduced in size and renovated. In addition, seven community rooms were built in and the altar was moved from its place in the eastern choir to the south wall, where it had stood before the reconstruction in 1908.

Today around 6400 members belong to the community. Church music as well as child and youth work are the main focuses of the community work.

Organ prospectus

The organ was built in 1968 by Orgelbau Hammer (Hanover); the case comes from the previous organ (Furtwängler & Hammer, 1908) and has been expanded to include pedal towers at the side. The instrument has 40 stops on three manuals and a pedal . The game contractures are mechanically, the Registertrakturen are electric.
